Climate Conversations in Sidmouth
July 18, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
As part of the CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS:
About this event
Sidmouth Coastal Community Hub and The Thelma Hulbert Gallery are collaborating to bring Climate Conversations to Sidmouth 10am till 4pm.
As part of the event which will see creative activities taking place from the THG’s Creative Cabin, Helen will talk about her new book – so fitting with the theme of Climate Conversations and in keeping with SCCH’s 2021 theme of Rockpools, Reefs and Reconnecting.
Author Helen Scales said “Humanity’s connections with the ocean run deep, seeping into places most of us will never see for ourselves, but where great wonders lie that breathe life into the whole planet. My aim as a writer is to transport readers into the deepest reaches of the oceans, to find out what lives there and see why it matters to us all, and perhaps to conjure new imaginings of what else might be there still to discover.”
Published by Bloomsbury The Brilliant Abyss tells the story of our relationship with the deep sea – how we imagine, explore and exploit it.
“Helen Scales’ beautiful account reveals the astonishing complexity and im-portance of the creatures of the abyss, to the planet and to us.”
Callum Roberts, Professor of Marine Conservation, University of Exeter, and series Scientific Advisor to BBC Blue Planet II
The event will be outside under a marquee with socially distanced seating. We kindly ask you to book for this free event to enable us to manage it safely.
This event will be hosted in an open sided marquee on the Ham, other activities taking place on the day include Creativity on the Coast painting activities, East Devon Withy Pot Making, Sidmouth Trawlers will be serving fish baps and SCCH will provide music and a bar in The Fishermen’s Shed.
This event is also in collaboration with Winstone Books, Sidmouth and supported by Dukes – Sidmouth Hotels and Sidmouth Town Council.
