online meeting: Climate and Ecology Bill

March 25 @ 7:00 pm

.

Will UK lead on Climate and Ecology? The CEE Bill and our future

The CEE Bill, supported by 100 cross party MP’s, updates the Climate Change Act of 2008 on UK carbon reduction, protects biodiversity and calls for citizen participation.
Join us online on Thursday 25th March at 7 pm for this lively discussion on the Bill and the need for it. Speakers are:
Prof Tim Lenton of the Global Systems Institute at Exeter University. Tim specialises in earth system science and tipping points, both natural and social.
Harry Barton, CEO of Devon Wildlife Trust will discuss a nature and biodiversity recovery strategy, and Sarah Lunnon of the CEE Bill Alliance, will show how the Bill charts a course for the road ahead.
There will be live Q & A.

The Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill  highlights what could be done if serious attempts were made to curb UK greenhouse emissions in compliance to the Paris goal of keeping global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.  It also highlights the perilous state of nature and the need for urgent action.  The planet is at the start of a sixth mass extinction in its history, with huge losses already reported in larger animals that are easier to study.  But global populations of insects are also falling fast.
For example, the number of widespread butterfly species fell by 58% on farmed land in England between 2000 and 2009. The UK has suffered the biggest recorded insect falls overall, though that is probably a result of being more intensely studied than most places. The CEE Bill calls for increased protection for habitats and species in UK and conservation along supply chains.
What we can do

1. A variety of videos on Youtube provide more information on the Bill.
eg Charlie Gardener, one of the authors, introduces the Bill (1.36 min)
2. Write to your MP’s.  There’s a guide here . Caroline Lucas has a 3 minute video on How to lobby your MP
3. Write to your councillor and ask them to put forward a motion of support for the CEE Bill.  Devon County Council will have the opportunity to vote for such a motion in April, you could ask them to support it.
There will be template letters on Transition Exeter’s website coming soon.

On a broader front this video, a COP26 Panel event highlights the need for the CEE Bill and rapid action in UK.  The first 4 minutes with Tim Jackson on carbon budgets is a tough listen, followed by some of the approaches that will help, including Kate Raworth’s accessible and positive presentation on doughnut economics (21 mins in all).
