Dear Turn Lyme Green Supporters
NEXT MEETING Organic Farming: What does it mean and is it worth it?
On Tuesday, 12 November
Royal Lion Hotel, Blue Room, Lyme Regis 7.15 for 7.30pm
All welcome. Alexa has lived and worked at Lower Hewood Farm since 2008, alongside a small team producing Soil Association certified organic food for local households and restaurants. The talk aims to highlight the ups and downs of maintaining organic status against a backdrop of changing attitudes and debates about environmentally responsible food production and consumption. Alexa will also talk about learning the value of community and collaboration in the farming context, and discuss how these vital relationships have profoundly influenced her understanding of farming and the wider world.
“Since I started farming eleven years ago I’ve come to believe passionately that developing communities around smaller mixed holdings, enables more people to live rich, satisfying and varied lives. By working alongside others to produce good food according to organic principles, I’ve found my own life richer culturally, socially and spiritually. Meanwhile the place is teeming with wildlife and increasing numbers of plant species.. And it’s been wonderful to see more and more people find ways of working and living on the land nearby, and new models for doing so.
As a woman coming late to farming and knowing next to nothing, I found myself instinctively wanting to work with nature and reduce impacts. The land itself seemed to hold the answers, and delivered lesson after lesson in the wisdom of sustainable methods. How exhilarating it is feel the strength of this movement reflecting the things I and millions of others have learned about nature through farming.
That’s why we need to stand together to make agriculture work for the planet, not against it. There’s so much more to be done! Change must come and it’s crucial that farmers are part of it. “
