Government commits to local selling for community energy schemes

  • by JW

“A right to supply locally would enable community energy schemes to sell the clean power they generate directly to local homes and businesses. Communities across the UK would see the benefits of this through affordable bills, local jobs, climate safety and energy security.” [Power for People]

.

It was earlier in the year that the government finally committed to putting community energy in the Energy Bill. And so, as declared by the Director of Power for the People Steve Shaw, “This support for the sector will give it and potential investors much-needed confidence. Community-run clean energy projects could be powering millions of homes and saving millions of tonnes of CO2 within the next ten years.”

And last month further commitment was made: see the video below from the newsletter sent out on 18th July – with the same full message put together in Power for People’s press statement Government commit to local selling for community energy schemes.

To recap what Power for People are about, it was founded in 2017 and is a not-for-profit organisation, aiming to see the UK rapidly transition to 100% clean energy and for this to benefit local communities. A particularly interesting piece is from the campaign’s director Steve Shaw: Why I Started Power for People.
