Help at hand: the WI

  • by JW

The efforts of WI members all over the country to help their local hospitals by sewing scrubs, face masks, scrub bags and other items has been incredible.

Last year, the Sidford Women’s Institute celebrated their first centenary:

There are some great postings on the national WI Facebook pages – many of which are about lifting the spirits of those in isolation.

But many postings are showing what practical help the WI is providing:

The efforts of WI members all over the country to help their local hospitals by sewing scrubs, face masks, scrub bags and other items has been incredible.

WIs and federations have made thousands of items and counting to support local demand. Members in Buckinghamshire Federation have made over 3000 scrub laundry bags to give to local hospitals; Brislington WI in Avon Federation had made 4,366 scrub bags as of yesterday and Dovestone WI in Lancashire Federation has supported its local hospital by making gowns, headbands, scrub bags and more. These are just a few examples of the brilliant work by members, but we will continue to share more on social media and the website in the coming days and weeks.

At present, these projects are being managed locally by WIs and various volunteer groups to respond to particular local need. The NHS is under significant pressure at the current time, and so we want to make sure that any contribution members make to support our NHS is timely, useful and responds to local need. As needs vary so greatly by area, the NFWI is not currently running a national appeal for these items, but we urge WI members to reach out to their local healthcare providers and organise support on a local level.

If you would like to help, ‘For The Love Of Scrubs’ is a Facebook group identifying hospitals across the UK that have a shortage of scrubs. You can join here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1500699350098765/
