We can ask with confidence Is Sidmouth an ‘age friendly’ community? And the answer is a resounding Yes! Sidmouth businesses have been going dementia-friendly for some time now and there are so many clubs and services and groups that work with and for our elderly, both those who manage and those who struggle a little.

To take one important aspect of life, the likes of Travel Devon from the county council look at accessibility for all and the Sidmouth Voluntary Services provide services to help people get about.

But there is a lot of excellent guidance online to be had on travel for the elderly and less able.

We are very pleased to be able to publish a guest piece from Avrielle Johnson, of Sustainability Reporter, who looks at practical suggestions of positive ways forward:

Traveling should be an experience that’s accessible for everyone, yet 51% of disabled respondents surveyed cited stress as their main detractor from getting away on holiday. For many disabled individuals, traveling presents unique challenges which add unnecessary concerns and worries about getting away. But they’re not insurmountable. In fact, according to Skyscanner’s guide on inclusive travel rights for disabled people: “more is being done than ever before to ensure the rights of disabled travelers are being taken into account at every stage of their journey.”

The guide shares more information to shine a light on the key barriers, as well as exploring the growing efforts within the travel industry to accommodate disabled travellers, from accessibility-focused renovations to inclusive policies.

It’s a vital resource that discusses the rights of disabled individuals across various modes of transport, accommodations, and destinations, ensuring they can make informed decisions and enjoy stress-free travel. By providing actionable tips and insights, Skyscanner not only supports disabled travellers but also underscores the importance of inclusivity in tourism, benefiting both individuals and the industry as a whole.
