Are you passionate about good food? Would you like to support people in your community to reduce food waste? Or perhaps you’d like to help run community meals using surplus food from supermarkets, farms and the high street as part of a Food Surplus Café?
In the UK, we throw away over 7 million tonnes of household food and drink every year, the majority of which could have been eaten. The average family with kids wastes around £700. There is also enormous amounts of good quality unwanted food available from local producers and shops which can be turned into tasty community meals.
Please not that it is NOT a practical cookery workshop.
This day is in two parts:
The morning session will be run by Beth from Somerset Waste Partnership and using lots of interactive activities from Love Food Hate Waste she will help you understand the key reasons why people waste food in the home. She will provide lots of practical ideas so that you can help other people eat well and waste less. You’ll be able to pick up a resource pack full of activities and you’ll be able to borrow displays and equipment from CAG Devon to take to community events.
The afternoon will look at the steps needed to set up a Food Surplus Cafe in your community; from sourcing and storing food, to recruiting volunteers, health and hygiene, publicity and all the things you need to consider to turn a mound of unwanted food into a free meal for the community. For the Crediton session you will get the chance to hear from the Sustainable Crediton Waste Action Group about the Food Surplus Cafes that the group has trialled in Crediton and from CAG Devon about the support they can offer you to set up your own group.
