Money available for Historic High Streets

  • by

Sidmouth has more listed buildings than anywhere in Devon apart from Exeter, so why don’t we capitalise on that?

From today Local Authorities can apply to a new fund to help High Streets and bring historic buildings back into use. Compared with many town centres we are doing well but that doesn’t mean that we couldn’t do with some help, so perhaps our Cllrs will find this document of interest?

Derby received money from the last round and it has brought many buildings back to life, and Derby wasn’t particularly run down compared with some places. Much of the improvement has been brought about by ‘cleaning up’ buildings. ‘The historic shopping area, in a designated Conservation Area, needed investment to refresh its collection of historic buildings whose character had been lost through neglect, clumsy alteration and crude modern fascias.’

We need to complete the application form soon, there is a 12th July deadline.

We need to get the community and the Councils working together much better to improve our economy and therefore all of our lives. The VGS is committed to trying to bring this about, in a sustainable way of course.
