Sidmouth does indeed have some beautiful bench spots – as captured by local photographer Kyle Baker:

However, there are still not enough benches to be had – especially where and when needed.
Here’s a letter to the Herald from 2009:
MADAM – I recently took a holiday in the delightful town of Sidmouth with an elderly relative aged 82. We really had a nice time, but were unable to browse around the shops due to the lack of benches around the town centre.
I know it is difficult to site benches in town centres, but it is a must for our ageing population as they grow unsteady on their feet or need to rest just a while.
I am sure you could do something about this to accommodate the elderly in your beautiful town.

Today, from the Ham to the Esplanade to other spots around Sidmouth, perhaps a few more benches would be welcome, for both locals and visitors…
