“The importance of being a good Digital Citizen”

  • by JW

Reaching out across virtual space to share experience and information.

Working with children “about keeping our community clean, saving the environment, ocean pollution, climate change and how we all can help by going green.”

.

On our sister page Sidmouth Solar Punk, we’ve just featured some of the creative science looking at ways to deal with plastic pollution in our oceans:

On another of our sister pages, the Futures Forum blog, back in 2019 we covered some of the same issues – starting with a message from readers all the way from New Zealand:

Futures Forum: Plastic pollution: the impact on our oceans and what we can do about it.

The VGS has just been contacted by readers from the United States – with a very positive story of how they are dealing with things there.

This is all very inspiring – as groups, especially those working with young people, reach out across virtual space to share experience and information.

Here’s Mikayla Saunderson’s message in full:

I’ve been working closely with my local community center to create an upcoming program aimed towards children about keeping our community clean, saving the environment, ocean pollution, climate change and how we all can help by going green during Earth Day.

It’s my first time working with kids in a teaching environment so I thought I would take some time to do a little bit of extra research that I can share with my group. That research led me to your page which was such a great jumping off point for our talk about ocean pollution that I can share with my group. Thanks!

One of the younger girls who has also been volunteering with our conservation efforts, has been helping me out. She just started high school in the fall and has basically dubbed herself my assistant. While I was working on other things, she found this cool article filled with information about ocean plastic pollution

I wanted to pass it along to you to see if it was possible to add it to your page. I’d really like to show Ashley the importance of being a good Digital Citizen and reaching out to others to give compliments especially in this digital age where people are content to say mean things anonymously.

Thanks for your information and for listening to her suggestion, Mikayla

Here’s that guide – from a packaging company in the States keen to highlight the latest issues:

“The more people understand plastic ocean pollution, the more chances there are that action will be taken to reduce it.”

To finish with a visual representation of where much of our plastic pollution ends up – on the shores of the United States:
