A call for empathy and awareness in times of crisis

This is very much the time of year when our hearts and minds go out to those less fortunate than ourselves – especially from our safe and sound Sid Valley, out into the world of tears and troubles.

Art and culture often provide the right ways to express our feelings of empathy – after all, “culture and creativity can inspire and engage“. And the latest piece of work on the Wallspace on the Ham does just that, with the UKR LXVE | Sidmouth School Of Art:

Sidmouth School of Art unveil new abstract artwork in time for the festive season.

This digital piece is a call for empathy and awareness in times of crisis. The work by artist SAME YEAR (Sam Eyre) references Ukraine’s struggles and the fragility of borders.

The artwork, with symbolic colour fields of blue and yellow, invites reflections about peace and conflict. Maps, poetry and found materials are interwoven reflecting the artists interest in how place and history, stories of love and loss combine with geopolitical tensions to shape human connection.

Sidmouth School of Art curate Sidmouth’s unique Wallspace project – an outdoor gallery by the sea using traditional paper based printworks reflecting their temporary nature, with new work, styles and themes presented regularly year-round.

The team pulled out all the stops to present a new work in time for Christmas following a storm which ironically ripped off the previous COP30 work which addressed climate change issues. The storm damaged COP30 will be re-presented in a new exhibition by the Ham in the New Year.

Sidmouth School of Art’s Louise Cole, Director of Development said:

We are grateful for the speedy work of the team and volunteers, who had to install the work themselves given the unexpected timescales we were working with. We are pleased to present this new thoughtful, hopeful work in time for the holiday season. We didn’t want there to be a blank space at this time and appreciate that the gallery has become a part of the landscape of Sidmouth giving access to art for all.”

Same Year, who grew up in Sidmouth, is a contemporary artist whose work, through experimental digital collage, explores where identity, environment and global narratives intertwine, forging new understanding.
