Sidmouth gears up for Fairtrade Fortnight

.
As usual, Sidmouth will be participating in the nationwide Fairtrade Fortnight 2020 celebrations with a host of events around the town.
.
The programme kicks off on Friday 28 February with a visit by two cocoa farmers from Kuapa Kokoo, Ghana, who supply cocoa for the Fairtrade label Divine chocolate taking part in a schools conference at Sidmouth Primary School in the morning.
In the afternoon they  will be giving a presentation to the public at St Teresa’s Hall at 2.30 pm (doors open at 2 pm). Come along and find out more about the cocoa trade, climate change and fair pay for farmers in Africa. Refreshments will be available, along with a range of Fairtrade stalls. Waitrose will also display their wide range of Fairtrade food and drink with some free samples.
.
On the following day (Saturday 29) from 10.30 am, Sidmouth library will be hosting a coffee morning with homemade cakes, along with a story time and activity session for children with popular local storyteller Tony Sparkes. There will also be a library display throughout Fairtrade Fortnight, which this year runs from 24 February – 8 March.
.
And on Sunday 1 March, 9.30 am, the Methodist Church – one of many across Sidmouth which will be joining in the celebrations – opens its doors for a Fairtrade & Local Community Breakfast, including a sale of Fairtrade foods and crafts.
.
Sidmouth’s Fair Trade Group coordinator Wendy Spratling says:
.
“All the events are free of charge and open to everyone. This is a chance to find out more about how Fairtrade is improving the lives of the farmers and workers who grow our food in developing countries We hope that as many people as possible will join us in supporting Sidmouth as a Fairtrade Town – both now and in future – by buying where you see the Fairtrade label.”
.
Sidmouth achieved Fairtrade Town status in 2016, and has recently received a renewal certificate which was presented to the Town Council on 3 February.
.
