Laundry Lane: new housing in old buildings

  • by JW

The latest plans do not knock down the original late-Victorian brick buildings – but have made full use of the unique design.

.

There have been moves for some years by now to develop the former laundry on Laundry Lane – or, rather, Ballard Grove in Sidford.

Earlier plans for five homes on the ‘dilapidated’ Sidford site had been rejected back in 2017 – as the planning committee refused the bid due to flood risk

Finally in June 2022, Sidmouth Town Council’s planning committee approved the application 18/1169/FUL

The full application was granted in September 2022: 22/1339/VAR | Variation of Condition No. 1 (Approved Plans) on application 18/1169/FUL. | 1 Laundry Lane Sidford Devon EX10 9QR

When marketing the site, now with planning permission, the agent Stag’s gave the particulars:

The Steam Laundry, Laundry Lane, Sidford, Sidmouth, Devon, EX10 9QR = Development opportunity – Victorian industrial buildings with PP to convert to 3 unique homes & a new B1 unit

The latest plans do not knock down the original late-Victorian brick buildings – but have made full use of the unique design – as the Stag’s particulars show.

Here are photos from Google Maps from a year ago before work started on the site – showing the buildings as indeed very delipidated.

The completed buildings will be showcased later…
