Volunteering is an intrinsic part of life in Britain: it is an essential ingredient of civic society and it goes beyond what official bodies do.
In the Sid Valley, individuals and groups do a lot to contribute to the social fabric through their volunteer work.
The volunteer spirit in Sidmouth became a lifeline during the pandemic – and Sid Valley Help was key to that volunteer effort.
Volunteers are regularly recognised in the Sustainable Sidmouth Champion Awards – celebrating our sustainable community – with several blog posts devoted to “volunteers” on the Champion Awards website.
And this spirit has been acknowledged by many organisations in the Sid Valley – including celebrating volunteers at the Sidmouth School Of Art and the annual Sidmouth Rotary Citizen of the Year.
When it comes to ‘green groups’, there is a good list of Conservation Groups from the Sidmouth Town Council as well as a very useful page on conservation volunteering and career opportunities from the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group.
There is also an excellent map and leaflet “SIDMOUTH – Powered by volunteers” put together by Cllr Kevin Walker [VGS representative on the town council], designed by Lyndsay Hooper and funded by STC in late 2025. Here’s the Environment Groups – A5 Leaflet – Interactive version and here’s the Environment Groups – A3 Portrait – Interactive Map
And the Environment Groups – A1 Landscape – Interactive Map [very good quality – and interactive] is also produced here as an illustration of what it offers:
