Green jobs ‘soaring’ in the South West

The picture of the local economy again looks mixed, as recruitment activity falls in the South West amid weaker employer confidence:

In November, according to the latest KPMG and REC, UK Report on Jobs Survey, permanent staff appointments fell to the greatest extent since July, while temp billings fell back into contraction after a marginal rise in October. The slowdown in recruitment activity and reports of redundancies drove further marked upturns in candidate availability, most notably for those seeking permanent roles.

And yet, the Heart of the South West LEP can look back on a year of growth:

To date the LEP has created over 7,800 new jobs, helped over 18,000 businesses to grow, and connected over 9,500 homes and businesses to superfast broadband. Major business support projects this year included the launch of the British Business Bank’s £200 million South West Investment Fund and the new Angel Investor Programme, set to drive economic growth by identifying, educating, and supporting new investors.

But it needs to be more than simply driving ‘growth’. In another report, it seems to be that green jobs are soaring in the South West:

The South West has the second-highest proportion of adverts for green jobs in the UK, a new study has shown – just behind Scotland. PwC’s latest Green Jobs Barometer showed the number of green jobs advertised in the region grew from 2.42% to 2.67% … The Barometer, published for its third year, tracks movements in green job creation, the wider benefits created by green jobs, job losses associated with net zero transition, carbon intensity of employment and green workspaces, across regions and sectors... The Green Jobs Barometer also showed that green jobs “tend to be higher quality jobs”, with higher levels of pay and greater levels of job satisfaction compared to non-green roles.
