Devon flag colours were chosen to ‘keep it simple and impactful’ [Sue Stanbury, artist and SCC member]
.
The Sidmouth School of Art’s latest project has been the Festival of Flags – giving the town the opportunity, as reported in the latest Herald, to “fly the flag for Sidmouth’s community organisations“.
One of those organisations is the VGS’s very own Sidmouth Cycling Campaign – with its contribution flying on social media where we can find it thanks to the SCC’s very own in-house artist: “Well done to Sue Stanbury for making our flag in the High Street as part of the Festival of Flags!“
Sue is a member of the SCC’s steering group – and has now penned a piece describing what she got up to, which we are very pleased to share:
“Having decided to take part in this project we went with three potential designs to one of the design meetings held at the Craft Hub in Sidmouth. Taking advice from the School of Art one design was preferred as it was more graphic, and given that the flags were to be placed 5 metres up over the High Street it was preferable to have a clear design which identified the group at first glance.
A huge range of colours were available which were remnants from Bristol’s balloon making workshops, but Devon flag colours were chosen to ‘keep it simple and impactful’.
The following week a transfer was made of the initial design to scale it up to the size required, and then cutting out started.
All was going smoothly as the material was great to work with until the sewing which went a little awry with the wheel, but the saving grace is that was to be displayed high up. After learning how to breathe as well as sew on a very fast sewing machine, given that I wasn’t the best sewer in school, one side was done.
Thanks to the Sidmouth School of Art for finishing, backing and completing the flag, which looks great, I am very proud, but I think my entry into The Great British Sewing Bee will have to be postponed.”
