The Sidmouth Civic Food Forest launches

  • by JW

“a valley-wide initiative where food is grown across both public spaces and private gardens.”

.

The very active Sidmouth Community Food Forest is designed to show how low cost food producing sites can be both productive and environmentally sensitive. And it has indeed been very successfully showing just this.

Two years ago, not very long after its inception, one of its founders, Stefan Drew won Sustainable Sidmouth Champion Awards – with a further showcasing of this sustainable project detailing its considerable promise.

And as well as fulfilling this promise and more on its site at Sidford, the project has inspired even more – with the launch this week of the Sidmouth Civic Food Forest:

In Sidmouth, Devon, we are home to what is believed to be the world’s only *civic food forest*—a valley-wide initiative where food is grown across both public spaces and private gardens. This unique project brings the community together to cultivate a sustainable, permaculture-inspired ecosystem.

This group is for anyone who is involved in growing our civic food forest, interested in replicating the concept in other parts of the world, or simply wants to create their own permaculture-inspired food forest. Whether you’re a seasoned grower or just starting out, everyone is welcome!

The goal here is to keep the advice and guidance simple and accessible. While much of the discussion will focus on the civic food forest here in Sidmouth, I encourage posts, questions, comments, and engagement from people around the globe. Let’s share ideas, learn from each other, and grow together!

Congratulations on the launch – and let’s hope it grows.

And on the basis of the very wide success of both the Sidmouth Arboretum [what is believed to be the world’s only *civic arboretum*] and the Bite Sized Gardening site, this new initiative should do well!
