It is clear that climate change and flooding in East Devon are issues we are going to have to increasingly live with and deal with. It is also clear that there are solid, practical ways to prevent and protect homes against flooding.

We are very pleased, therefore, to be able to publish this guest piece on the issues and the practicalities from consultant and researcher Alex Fitz:

A changing landscape: why flood safety is more important than ever for Devon residents

In the picturesque landscapes of Devon, where rolling hills meet rugged shores, it can be easy to overlook the potential risks of living in such idyllic surroundings. But with climate change accelerating, the importance of flood safety in coastal regions such as Devon has become more critical than ever.

Here, we will explore why flood precautions should be on your mind if you live in this rapidly changing landscape.

Extreme weather

As global temperatures rise, so do sea levels. With some 420 billion tons of ice melting from the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland each year, coastal areas worldwide are at an increasingly high risk of being flooded. Devon is already facing the impact of these changes, where coastal erosion and rising sea levels threaten homes and villages near the shores. Flood safety measures are essential to protecting both lives and property, both in the case of sudden floods and for ongoing protection against the changing landscape. While vast amounts of funding have already been channelled toward improving the region’s flood defences, it’s clear a more rapid response is needed to align with these growing threats.

Like many coastal areas, Devon is prone to experiencing extreme weather in the form of heavy rain, high winds and violent storms. Many of the county’s communities are set in deep valleys, where water quickly accumulates after heavy rainfall. Climate change is unfortunately amplifying this extreme weather and as a result, the risk of flooding has significantly increased. Empowering local communities with the knowledge and resources to protect themselves against flooding is paramount to the survival of Devon’s towns and villages.

Protecting infrastructure and ecosystems

There are a wealth of historic buildings and cultural sites in Devon, as well as the crucial infrastructure that makes this rural region habitable for thousands of people. Acting to implement flood safety measures as soon as possible is key to safeguarding the rich heritage of the area, as well as maintaining essential facilities and transport links.

Flooding can have severe consequences for businesses and agriculture, and can be devastating to local economies. To ensure the sustainability of Devon’s coastal towns and villages, flood protection must be a priority. Flooding also leads to soil erosion and habitat loss, as well as the contamination of water sources. By adopting flood safety measures, Devon’s ecosystems and wildlife can remain safe from the effects of flooding.

Emergency planning

From evacuation plans to emergency communication systems, being prepared for a flash flood or sudden natural disaster can dramatically reduce the impact of such a phenomenon on families and residents. Sea defence strategies and home flood defences are a powerful tool against the impact of flooding, as preparedness is half the battle when it comes to this natural threat.

Residents, local authorities and environmental agencies are coming together to build a network of support to help mitigate the risk of flooding in Devon. Investing in flood safety is key to protecting the future of Devon, and by taking proactive steps before disaster strikes, residents can help to ensure this beautiful region lives on for years to come.

Preventative measures

As climate change brings about unpredictable weather and new challenges, flood safety is crucial in Devon. By recognising the risk, implementing preventative measures, and fostering a community of informed residents, Devon will continue to be a desirable place to live and travel to.
